The Ladner Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo 2015 is pleased to present our speaker schedule for the event. If you haven't been to Seedy Saturday you won't want to miss it. I am still waiting on topics from some of my speakers and will update as we get closer to the event. Brian Minter spoke at the event last year and brought us up to speed on where the gardening industry was going. Thomas Hobbs needs no introduction. He is well known for his garden design and we are hoping to get a peek into his new garden in the Fraser Valley. His private gardens have been featured in many magazines such as House Beautiful, Better Homes and Gardens and Horticulture. Tom will have us inspired to think out of the box when it comes to designing our gardens. Tom is also the author of Shocking Beauty and the Jewel Box Garden. 
If you live locally, you will have met Robyn Leake at our Ladner Village Market in the summer. She is an amazing designer when it comes to containers. Robyn will be speaking at our event and showing you how to create the container of your dreams. 
Have you noticed the sudden increase in people canning over the last couple of years? Did you know that canning guidelines have changed? Darlene Tanaka works for Bernardin and will be hosting a canning workshop. Bring your canning questions for her to answer. 

On Sunday we have another lineup of speakers. Kim Greenwood will be showing us how to grow vegetables in containers. So many people live in condos and townhouses and containers are all they have room for. With everyone wanting to grow their own food these days, using containers makes it easy for those with little space. 

The Botanus ladies will be coming to speak. They haven't told me the topic yet but I hope it will be summer bulbs. I saw the lilies above when on a tour in Portland. They stand about 7 feet high under the banana plant. I want those lilies, wouldn't you? 
Kim Greenwood is doing a second workshop for families and their children. This is geared to parents with children between the ages of 2-7 as you will be planting something up with your child to take home. 
Our last speaker of the day is Don Bruchet who will be giving us a class on how to get your seeds started. After all that's what Seedy Saturdays are all about. We want you to buy seeds and learn how to use them. We want all of you to be successful gardeners. So come on out and enjoy the weekend with us. It will be a great kickoff to the new garden season.

    Hi Kristin. A friend of mine on FB told me about the event. I live in North Van and so it's not too far to drive out. I'm thinking Saturday would be a nice day. How lucky are we with the weather? :D

      Veronica, happy to hear you will be coming. Its going to be a fun day. The weather is at least 3 weeks ahead of the norm. I love it.

Its Official!

Its official. We finally received our incorporation papers. I know, what does that have to do with a community garden? Well you just don't start planting as we found out very quickly. You have to apply for a name for your society through the provincial government. First you apply for a name by checking trademarks and copyrights. Luckily Ladner Community Garden Society wasn't taken. You pay a fee for the name right away. The next step is applying for incorporation. You want to form a society and have directors as you can't lease public space without going through this process. Okay, another fee, a hundred dollars to be exact. Applying for incorporation is writing bylaws which can be painful at best if you want to write your own. Thank you Mark for doing such a wonderful job writing our bylaws. If you don't write your own, there are easier ways such as following out set bylaws as given in the Society Act. Our hard work as paid off as we received our red seal of approval ...

Ladner Seedy Saturday is Only a Few Weeks Away!

Yes, it's time for Ladner Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo 2018. Our organizing committee is busy behind the scenes registering new and returning vendors, booking speakers and organizing the seed swap for the event. Are you a vendor wanting to come to Seedy Saturday? We still have a few tables left for lease. I am excited about our two speakers coming this year. Janis Matson is a well known garden speaker and owns Shoreline Landscape Design. Janis is an instructor at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Langley and also teaches classes at VanDusen Botanical Garden. Janis will be teaching us how to use ornamental grasses in the home garden. Our next speaker is Randal Atkinson. Known as West Coast Garden' s Plant Expert Extraordinaire, Randal is the go to person for design, plant selection, growing and care of plants. May in the Ladner Community Garden

 Its been a busy spring at the Ladner Community garden. All our allotment beds are full and we have started a wait list for 2017. Can you believe that? Its only May. In fact if you want a garden bed at the community garden its best to apply in the fall. By the end of January we know if people will stay another year and which garden plots will be empty. Monday mornings have volunteers working on making this the best community garden. Red poppies have taken over the back corner of the garden and we have a few escapees further afar. I love how they sway in the breeze amongst the tall grass.   This allotment garden is not only maximizing the space allotted but the lettuce will love this shade from the large leaves nearby.  I am always amazed at how much you can grow in 40 square feet of soil.  Asparagus fronds reach to the sky in this garden. Its just about to flower and I wonder if collecting seed would be a good idea. I will have to ask the ...
