Ladner Seedy Saturday Was a Huge Success

Ladner Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo 2014 was a huge success. Thanks goes to all our volunteers, vendors and customers for making this event successful. It was a fun  day had by all. After five months of working on this event, it was nice to see it all come together. Let's take a look at a few of the displays.

Ray Mattei from Tropic to Tropic came with his plants. He had everything from olive trees, avocado trees and citrus. Did you know many of these plants are now hardy here? I came home with Camellia sinensis or Russian tea shrub although I would have loved to have bought way more.

Distinctive Perennials brought his amazing succulent containers and the mix of colours made it hard to choose which plant to take home. I couldn't resist buying a couple of small plants for my terrariums and will have to get some more soon.

We also had three speakers and as you can see it was standing room only. Brian Minter, Julia Common and Ian Tait gave wonderful presentations.

After each presentation finished, the gym would fill up with people eager to check out the gardening displays. With winter still hanging on, we needed that boost of green colour to get us thinking spring.

There was lots to see from plants and seeds to garden accessories and services.

Thank you to all the vendors for the lovely door prizes you donated. Customers loved winning something special to take home.

Everyone entered our draw for a prize that was given out every half hour.

Doesn't this lush display by J& J Enterprises make you want to start your spring containers?

All Things Organic came to talk to people about worm composting and its benefits.

It was fun to have Tatiana's Tomatobase back again this year. Their company sells a huge array of tomato and vegetable seeds for the home gardener. They have a seed bank that they maintain which holds up to 4000 different varieties of heirloom seeds. Their seeds are all open pollinated and heirlooms.

The seed swap saw a huge improvement this year and I will be bringing more seeds to swap next year. Gardeners brought in huge quantities of seeds to trade. It was fun talking about all the different seeds that were there.

Ladner Seedy Saturday is Here!

Ladner Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo is tomorrow February 15 and I am pretty excited. It has been a long six months of organizing and I hope everyone in the community has a great time. What is  Seedy Saturday? A Seedy Saturday is a day for like minded gardeners to celebrate the upcoming spring season. They come to trade seeds, buy seed, garden accessories and listen to informative presentations. It's a great way to kick start the garden season. It looks like winter is almost over as people are posting photos of their Crocuses in full bloom. That's a sure sign spring isn't very far away.

We will have some soil and manure sales outside tomorrow. We have a skid of Sea Soil and some steer manure. Get it early as last year it was sold out in one hour. The event starts at 10:00am with our first speaker, Brian Minter, at 10:15am. There is lots of free parking and a food cart will be on site to sustain you. If you need coffee, the Ladner Baptist Church will be running their coffee bar. So come on down and join us for a fun day of everything to do with gardening.
Don't forget to bring any garden tools you need sharpened. Alex Mazo will be there with his A-Mazing Mobile Sharpening. Watch for his truck in the parking lot.

Ladner Seedy Saturday- Only Six Days Away!

Its just six days until Ladner Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo and I can't wait! You know what's going to happen. We will have our impending snowfall and it's all going to wash away so the spring bulbs can bloom. The end of winter is so close now. We gardeners are optimistic and we are always looking for the beauty in each season. For me spring is my favourite with the signs of new life emerging from the soil.
What a better way to jumpstart a new gardening season by coming to Ladner Seedy Saturday.

Have you got seeds to share? Our seed swap is back again this year and we just received a large donation of seeds for everyone to look through. Bring your seeds in their original packages as we can see the description of the plant on the package.

If you have collected your own seeds, please package them like the ones above or use glassine envelopes. Mark the name of the plant, if it is open pollinated or hybrid, how many seeds are in the package, the year the seed was harvested and if its annual or perennial. If you don't know all the information about your seeds, the VanDusen master gardeners can help you identify your plant.

Wondering who is going to be at the event? Back again by popular demand are the Bartlett Tree Experts. Everyone loves trees but often we need help when our trees become stressed or need pruning. The Bartlett team is here to help you.

West Coast Seeds will also be selling their seeds at Ladner Seedy Saturday. For those of you who are coming from out of the area, West Coast Seeds is located right in the heart of Ladner with their warehouse operation on 64th street and their retail store on Elliot street in Ladner. If you have time to visit the store, it will be a true gardeners experience as there is just so much to see and buy.

The South Delta Evergreen Garden Club will also be at Ladner Seedy Saturday. If you are interested in joining a garden club, this is the one for you. They have very interesting speakers and meet on the third Tuesday of each month at Kin House in Ladner at 730pm. This month the very entertaining Egan Davis, who is an award winning gardener, will be speaking at the garden club. You don't want to miss Egan who has a life long passion for horticulture.
