Soil Shoveling Work Party: Saturday March 23

Big thanks to all those who made it out for last week's bed-raising and garden cleanup project.  Our second work party is this Saturday,10am-12pm.  


This week, we will be placing fresh soil into the Children's Beds.  Soil will also be available for all those who arranged to have their beds raised, and who paid for soil to fill them.  Please come out and lend a hand: we always appreciate your help

The shed is stocked with tools for the garden community to use.  Thanks for keeping it tidy!  
The shed is also stocked with the new volunteer hours log book, so be sure to record any hours you spend helping out with community projects at the garden. 
We hope to get our projects finished this spring so we can all put out feet up this summer and enjoy a community meal or two together. 


Lynn and her helpers are busy getting some of the allotments filled with soil today. Thanks Lynn for receiving the soil at such an early hour! We ordered ten inches of soil for those who paid for the soil this week. That should help fill your gardens. Remember this soil is only for those who paid us for it. If you want us to order some more soil, let us know as soon as possible so we can get it delivered next week.

    My husband, dog and I walked by the community garden today. We live just off of 64th, but had no idea there was a community garden until last week. Everyone is doing so wonderful with the garden, and we were particularly happy to hear there will be accessible gardening in the future. Spring is here and summer is around the corner. We look forward to watching the garden beds bloom and grow! Cheers, The Harder family

Its official. We finally received our incorporation papers. I know, what does that have to do with a community garden? Well you just don't start planting as we found out very quickly. You have to apply for a name for your society through the provincial government. First you apply for a name by checking trademarks and copyrights. Luckily Ladner Community Garden Society wasn't taken. You pay a fee for the name right away. The next step is applying for incorporation. You want to form a society and have directors as you can't lease public space without going through this process. Okay, another fee, a hundred dollars to be exact. Applying for incorporation is writing bylaws which can be painful at best if you want to write your own. Thank you Mark for doing such a wonderful job writing our bylaws. Growing Your Own Food

     Carrot harvest   Growing your own food just became even more important than ever. As prices increased this fall we saw lettuce and cauliflower go up in price. Reasons for that are many but the drought we had could be one of the reasons. Overall the transportation costs of everything are up due to the high cost of fuel and that's being passed on to the consumer. Of course, many of us are not earning any more than we did before. I predict that 2023 will see another resurgence of food growing like we did at the beginning of the pandemic. Some of us may be doing it with less space than we had before so that creates more challenges. Just to let you know how popular gardening has become, our community garden has a waitlist of over twenty people. They may not get a spot in the garden for several years. Ladner Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo 2015 Presents..

The Ladner Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo 2015 is pleased to present our speaker schedule for the event. If you haven't been to Seedy Saturday you won't want to miss it. I am still waiting on topics from some of my speakers and will update as we get closer to the event. Brian Minter spoke at the event last year and brought us up to speed on where the gardening industry was going. Thomas Hobbs needs no introduction. He is well known for his garden design and we are hoping to get a peek into his new garden in the Fraser Valley. His private gardens have been featured in many magazines such as House Beautiful, Better Homes and Gardens and Horticulture. Tom will have us inspired to think out of the box when it comes to designing our gardens.
