Ladner Community Garden

I bet you thought we disappeared off the face of the earth. My apologies for not posting sooner. Life is busy with new grandchildren and new projects. But let's take a look at whats been happening at the Ladner Community Garden. This spring we had a huge interest in food gardening once again. We now have a wait list of eleven people and that's the longest its ever been. The directors are now brainstorming ways to shorten the list so be patient. The volunteers got together on two Monday mornings and helped weed and spread bark mulch. They also built a support system for the blackberries and weeded out the blueberry patch. We still have work to do but its hard with so few volunteers. The next project will be getting mulch on to the blueberry beds and planting under the pergola. I have plants to go in and they will look great. We just need a small work party to get the job done. Everyone has lots growing at the garden and most of the beds are planted for the season. Al...

Spring is just around the corner at the Ladner Community Garden. I hope everyone is ready for a busy spring. Just think, its only 12 days away! I was at the garden today and its still a bit soggy but with more sun each day it will dry up quickly. There is lots to do and our first spring work party is on Saturday, March 16 from 10am-12pm. We are going to clean up the garden, do some weeding and add some height to some of the raised beds. So if you are handy with tools or can help out with weeding and general tidying, you are welcome to come and help. You know what they say, many hands make light work. If it rains we will postpone our work party to the Sunday, March 17 at the same time. On March 23, we will be ordering new soil for the children's garden and getting the beds filled and ready to plant. The grade three class from Southpointe Academy will return on April 8 for their first garden class. It may be good to leave a bit of soil to shovel to keep them busy. They love digging!...

I had to post today as I wanted all the allotment owners to know that a city employee came to visit the garden today and she was amazed! She couldn't believe that everyone had plants growing already. Its been just three weeks tomorrow that we built this garden and I am so proud of all the hard work that has gone in to its creation. I am pretty excited that the children's garden is going in tomorrow. Someone asked why it was important to put this garden in now when classes don't start to come until September. They even wondered what we would grow in September. It takes time to grow a garden as all of you know but many non gardeners don't quite get it. In my greenhouse are a flat of pumpkins and squash just waiting for a new home. If I plant these seedlings in the middle of June they will be ready for the children to harvest in October. The children will use their math in the garden by counting pumpkin seeds or measuring and weighing the pumpkins. They will also be able ...
